Mandarin teachers in the local area

Mandarin teachers in the region are invited to attend this free training day to share ideas and develop new skills under the guidance of trainer Joe Bensley.

Mr Bensley is a University of Leeds graduate and has been teaching Chinese for over ten years in both primary and secondary schools. He currently works at The Petchey Academy in London and regularly delivers training for Mandarin teachers.

The aim of this training day is to provide teachers with a toolkit of ideas for developing positive classroom behaviour and language learning progress. Throughout the day we will explore and share a range of simple and practical teaching techniques for use in a Mandarin classroom. These will support teachers by helping establish encouraging learning environments whilst inspiring creative and engaging approaches to lesson planning, especially in regards to the teaching of the new Mandarin GCSE.

Morning:

  • 9:00 Registration

  • 10:30-12:00 – Mandarin Toolkit: Language activities to encourage Mandarin progress

Afternoon:

  • 13:00 -14:30 – Teaching the new GCSE: Strategies to achieve Mandarin success
  • 14:30 -15:00 – Q&A
  • 15:00 -15:05 – Conclusion and Closing

Workshop details

Positive behaviour management within a Mandarin classroom

The aim of this session is to model and share a range of positive behaviour management strategies within a Mandarin classroom. We will discuss methods to build positive relationships with students, to plan and structure lessons effectively, and to constructively monitor and give feedback.

Mandarin Toolkit: Language activities to encourage Mandarin progress

The aim of this session is to share a flexible toolkit of classroom activities.  We will model ways to use and create fun and competitive activities that are quick to create and can be applied to a range of Mandarin topics and language skills.

Teaching the new GCSE: Strategies to achieve Mandarin success

The aim of this session is to share a range of classroom activities that specifically deal with the new Mandarin GCSE. We will explore uses of Chinese literature and cinema to develop GCSE reading and speaking skills. We will also share methods to develop successful character memorisation and sentence construction so students are prepared for the writing exam.

More about the trainer

Joseph Bensley

Joseph Bensley is the Mandarin and Languages Programme Coordinator for The Petchey Academy in Hackney, East London. He worked in Gansu province, China as an English Teacher in the early 2000s before graduating from The University of Leeds in 2008 with a distinction in Modern Chinese. Throughout his degree Joseph also studied at both Beijing and Taibei Normal Universities.

After graduation Joseph completed a Community Languages PGCE at the University of Goldsmiths. He has spent the past 10 years developing as a secondary school Mandarin Chinese teacher in London, teaching for 5 years at Kingsford Community School in Newham before moving into his current role as Mandarin Coordinator at The Petchey Academy.
