China, employability and widening participation with Gary Izunwa
In this talk Gary Izunwa will discuss the benefits of having China experience, drawing from his personal story and professional work experience. A passionate advocate for social mobility, Gary will consider the barriers some people face and the advantages of making China experience accessible to a wider population.
Expect inspiration and practical ideas for individuals pursuing opportunities and organisations facilitating them.

In 2016 Gary was one of the young people who undertook a funded scholarship for five months of language study in China through Generation UK. Launched in 2013, the Generation UK aims to boost employability, enhance job prospects and help students to develop a global mindset. Generation UK is also committed to supporting social mobility & widening participation.
Gary credits the skills, experience and confidence he gained from the programme with helping him to start his career at leading companies including LinkedIn. Being born to Nigerian parents who migrated to the UK and growing up in a single-parent low-income household, he is also keenly aware of the factors that make this kind of opportunity less accessible to some.
As Outward Mobility Manager for British Council China Gary is now responsible for providing opportunities for young people from all backgrounds to spend time working or studying in China through Generation UK.
Last year he launched Climbing the Rungs, a social mobility podcast that aims to inspire young people from less privileged backgrounds to achieve career success and raise awareness of issues related to socio-economic background.
