BCI Supports Inclusive Student Wellbeing at Leeds with Staff Training

The Business Confucius Institute (BCI) recently delivered a cultural insight session for staff within the University of Leeds Student Counselling & Wellbeing Service, aimed at strengthening understanding of Chinese student experiences.
Hu Rong, Chinese Director of the BCI, alongside Chinese language teacher Jiahui Zhou, led the engaging and informative presentation. The session, attended by around 20 staff and delivered in a hybrid format (both in-person and online), reflected the Service’s commitment to providing inclusive and culturally informed support.
The University of Leeds offers a comprehensive Student Counselling and Wellbeing service, delivering free and confidential support through individual counselling sessions, wellbeing guidance, and a range of workshops and group activities.
The presentation aimed to deepen understanding of Chinese cultural norms and perspectives, particularly in relation to wellbeing and mental health, and was structured around three key themes:
- Who – Chinese students studying overseas: an overview
- How – Students’ wellbeing and mental health in universities in China
- Why – Cultural and social factors in addressing wellbeing issues
Key insights highlighted how cultural perspectives, social context, family expectations, and individual factors can shape awareness of mental health, trust in services, and help-seeking behaviours among Chinese students.
The session provided valuable insights into the frameworks that shape students’ experiences, with opportunities for discussion on applying this understanding in practice.
The Business Confucius Institute remains committed to supporting faculties across the University, not only through language learning and cultural activities, but also by contributing to the creation of a safer and more welcoming environment for all students.
Overall, the event was well received and emphasised the importance of cross-cultural dialogue in strengthening student support services.
