BCI Teacher Training Workshop Explores Mandarin Education in UK Schools
The Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds (BCI) recently welcomed Chinese language teachers to a professional development workshop focused on language education in UK schools and the delivery of GCSE and A Level Mandarin qualifications.
Held on 9 July, the training event brought together experienced educators and examination specialists to share practical insights into the UK education system, language teaching methodologies and examination preparation strategies. The workshop formed part of BCI’s ongoing commitment to supporting the professional development of Chinese language teachers and enhancing the quality of Mandarin education across the region.
The first session was led by Adrian Stipetic, Faculty Leader for Languages at Harrogate Grammar School. Drawing on his extensive experience in secondary education, Adrian provided an overview of the UK school system and outlined the structure and requirements of Mandarin GCSE and A Level qualifications. Participants also explored effective language teaching and learning strategies, curriculum design, course management and approaches to supporting student progress in the classroom.
The second session was delivered by Nan Wu, Mandarin Co-Deputy Headteacher at Leeds Chinese Community School (LCCS). Focusing on the Edexcel GCSE Chinese qualification, Nan guided participants through the examination structure and assessment criteria, with particular attention given to the speaking examination. The session examined common challenges faced by students and shared practical strategies to help teachers strengthen exam preparation and improve learning outcomes.
Throughout the workshop, attendees engaged in discussions on best practice in language education and gained valuable insights into both classroom teaching and examination requirements. The event provided an opportunity for teachers to deepen their understanding of the UK educational landscape while exchanging ideas and experiences with colleagues.
