Exploring Daoism: A Night of Philosophy, Culture & Wellbeing

On Tuesday 28th October, the University of Leeds hosted a captivating evening of philosophy and practice with the event Exploring Daoism: Philosophy, Culture & Wellbeing. Held in the Liberty Building’s LG.06 Lecture Theatre, the session drew a diverse audience of over 50 students, staff, and community members eager to engage with one of China’s most profound philosophical traditions.

Organised by the Business Confucius Institute in collaboration with the Leeds University Daoist Tai Chi & Qigong Society, the event blended lecture, cultural insight, and interactive exercises. Before the session began, attendees gathered to enjoy Chinese tea and traditional snacks generously provided by the Business Confucius Institute, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for the evening. Attendees were introduced to key Daoist concepts such as Wúwéi (“effortless effort”), Yin-Yang balance, and the role of Qi and meridians in holistic wellbeing.
The evening featured two distinguished presenters:
- Desmond Murray, President of the International Daoist Society, shared reflections from over 50 years of experience in Daoist arts and philosophy.
- Wai-Yii Yeung, Vice-President of the International Daoist Society and a Leeds alumna, led participants through practical exercises rooted in the Li Family Daoist Arts tradition.

The interactive workshop portion allowed attendees to experience Daoist ideas through movement and mindfulness, making abstract concepts tangible and personally meaningful. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the opportunity to engage with Daoism in such an accessible and thoughtful way.

The Business Confucius Institute looks forward to hosting future events that continue to foster intercultural dialogue, wellbeing, and curiosity on campus.
