Ode in Blue and Gold Brings the Silk Road to Life Through Music and Culture

On 15 June, audiences at the University of Leeds embarked on a journey through history, music and cultural exchange at Ode in Blue and Gold – Exploring the History of the Silk Road. Organised by Music Management MA students Junyue Zhang and Zihan Chen, and supported by the Business Confucius Institute (BCI), the workshop combined live musical performances, storytelling and interactive activities to explore the rich legacy of the Silk Road.

Held in the Helix Classroom of the EC Stoner Building, the event took audiences on a journey across centuries of Silk Road history, revealing how trade, travel and cross-cultural encounters helped shape Chinese music and artistic traditions.

The workshop was structured around three key chapters of Silk Road history. Beginning with the Han Dynasty, participants learned about Zhang Qian’s pioneering journeys to the Western Regions and the origins of the Silk Road. These stories were brought vividly to life through visual materials and live performances, including Traveller on the guzheng and the energetic ensemble piece Horse Racing, performed on erhu and guzheng.

The second chapter focused on the flourishing cultural exchanges of the Han and Tang dynasties, when Chang’an served as one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Through engaging commentary and musical performances, audiences explored the movement of ideas, art and culture between East and West. Highlights included the expressive pipa solo Huxuan Dance and the guzheng piece Fantasia.

The final chapter turned attention to the Maritime Silk Road and the expansion of cultural connections by sea. Performances such as Fisherman’s Song at Sunset and Spring River, Flower, Moon Night showcased the beauty and richness of traditional Chinese music, while a tea appreciation session offered attendees the opportunity to experience another aspect of Chinese cultural heritage.

The afternoon concluded with an interactive Silk Road map quiz, encouraging participants to test their knowledge and reflect on the historical connections explored throughout the workshop.

More than a concert or lecture, Ode in Blue and Gold successfully brought together music, history and cultural heritage in an accessible and engaging format. The event demonstrated how student-led initiatives can foster greater cultural understanding while creating opportunities for audiences to experience the richness of Chinese traditions firsthand.

The Business Confucius Institute was delighted to support Junyue Zhang and Zihan Chen in delivering this unique workshop, and extends its thanks to the organisers, performers and guests who contributed to its success.
