Celebrating the Year of the Snake 2025: A Memorable Chinese New Year Event at the Merrion Centre

The Merrion Centre played host to a vibrant and culturally rich Chinese New Year celebration on Saturday, 25th January 2025, drawing crowds eager to celebrate the Year of the Snake. This event, sponsored by the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds,  and hosted by our key partners Leeds Chinese Community School. It proved to be another resounding success with shoppers thoroughly enjoying the entertainment.

With free workshops, arts and crafts, and a range of captivating performances, the day was filled with the sounds, sights, and spirit of Chinese culture. From 11:00 am onwards, attendees were treated to an exciting line-up of entertainment. The opening Double Lion Dance was a spectacular sight, heralding the arrival of the New Year with grace and flair.

The performances included a variety of traditional and contemporary acts, showcasing the talent and artistry of local performers. Highlights included beautiful Gu Zheng and Gu Qin performances, and both stunning adult and children’s choirs that filled the Merion centre with harmony. Guests also enjoyed awe-inspiring Chinese dance routines including  Children's Dance,  Mongolian Dance, Latin Dance, Han Fu Dance, and Qi Pao Dance

One of the most anticipated moments of the day was the Traditional Chinese Hanfu and Qipao Showcase, which displayed the elegance and beauty of traditional Chinese attire, providing a fascinating cultural experience for all.

Throughout the event, the Merrion Centre was abuzz with positive energy, with visitors of all ages engaging with the cultural activities and performances. The support from the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds helped make this event possible, highlighting the continued commitment to fostering cross-cultural exchange and appreciation of Chinese heritage.

This celebration not only marked the start of the Chinese New Year but also demonstrated the strength of community, culture, and collaboration here in Leeds. It was a joyous day that left everyone looking forward to the next opportunity to come together and celebrate.
