Leeds City Academy Pupils Explore Chinese Language and Culture

Date

On Tuesday 14 July, the Business Confucius Institute (BCI) at the University of Leeds delivered a series of engaging Chinese language and culture sessions for Year 7 students at Leeds City Academy.

Throughout the day, five classes of 20 students took part in the workshops, with a total of 100 pupils participating. The sessions introduced students to Chinese language and culture through a range of interactive activities designed to inspire curiosity and broaden cultural awareness.

Students learnt basic Mandarin phrases and explored aspects of Chinese culture in a fun and accessible way. One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for pupils to try on traditional Hanfu clothing, giving them a hands-on experience of Chinese heritage and history. The activity sparked enthusiasm and provided a memorable insight into traditional Chinese dress.

The workshops encouraged students to engage with a different culture, develop global awareness and gain confidence in using simple Mandarin expressions. Pupils participated enthusiastically throughout the sessions, showing a keen interest in learning more about China and its traditions.

Leeds City Academy, located in Woodhouse, Leeds, is committed to providing enriching educational experiences that help students develop a broader understanding of the world around them. The visit from BCI supported this aim by offering Year 7 pupils a unique opportunity to explore Chinese language and culture first-hand.

The Business Confucius Institute regularly works with schools across Yorkshire and beyond, delivering outreach activities that promote language learning, cultural exchange and international understanding. Through initiatives such as these, BCI hopes to inspire young people to develop an interest in languages and global cultures from an early age.
