Taichi for Wellbeing: Supporting Leeds’ Senior Chinese Community
One of our BCI teachers, Tao Li, recently delivered a free Taichi workshop for the Leeds Chinese Community Association, bringing together 35 local Chinese residents for a gentle and engaging session focused on health and wellbeing. The majority of participants were retirees in their 70s and 80s, highlighting the importance of accessible activities that support physical and mental health in later life.
During the session, Tao Li introduced participants to some basic Baduanjin (Eight Section Brocade) movements alongside foundational movements of Taijiquan. These traditional practices are well known for promoting balance, flexibility, breathing control, and relaxation—making them especially beneficial for older adults.
The workshop provided a welcoming and supportive environment where attendees could move at their own pace while also enjoying the social connection of being part of a group. Participants responded warmly, appreciating both the health benefits and the opportunity to engage with others in their community.

Following this successful session, Tao Li will continue to support the group by delivering a total of four workshops throughout the month. These sessions aim to encourage regular physical activity, improve overall wellbeing, and create meaningful social interaction for seniors within the Leeds Chinese community.
This initiative reflects BCI’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and to supporting the health and wellbeing of older generations through culturally meaningful activities.
