Traditional Chinese Dance Workshop Showcases Cultural Expression at Spring World Unite Festival

Last week, the BCI as part of the Spring World Unite Festival hosted a well‑attended Traditional Chinese Dance Workshop, giving participants the chance to explore the grace, rhythm and cultural heritage of Chinese classical and folk dance.

The session was led by Jiahui, a versatile dancer specialising in Chinese dance with a particular passion for Guofeng jazz, a modern style that blends classical Chinese movement with contemporary expression. She also draws on experience in Latin and jazz dance, bringing an accessible and energetic teaching style to the workshop.

Participants were introduced to the origins and stylistic differences within traditional Chinese dance before trying beginner‑friendly movements themselves. The workshop emphasised enjoyment and cultural understanding, welcoming attendees of all backgrounds and levels of experience.
As part of the wider Spring World Unite Festival, the event contributed to the programme’s mission to celebrate the diversity of Leeds. The festival highlights global cultures through activities ranging from performances and workshops to language exchanges, food events and academic discussions — each encouraging engagement with different perspectives and international experiences.
