University of Leeds Students Shine at the 25th Chinese Bridge UK Finals

Three students from the University of Leeds proudly represented the University at the 25th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition UK Finals, one of the UK's most prestigious competitions for learners of Mandarin Chinese. Serenay Koch, Tomas Fraser and Ethan Atherton showcased exceptional language proficiency, confidence and creativity throughout the competition, demonstrating not only their Mandarin skills but also their deep appreciation and understanding of Chinese culture. In a particularly notable achievement, Ethan was awarded the Most Creative Award for achieving the highest score in the Chinese cultural performance category.

The competition brought together more than 20 talented students from universities across the country, including representatives from the Universities of Edinburgh, Nottingham, Newcastle, Durham and Cardiff, as well as King's College London, SOAS, Oxford Brookes University and Coventry University.

This year's event was particularly special as it marked the 25th anniversary of the Chinese Bridge competition in the UK, celebrating a quarter-century of promoting Chinese language learning and cultural exchange among university students. The occasion was commemorated with a large celebratory cake, which was shared by participants, guests and organisers, creating a festive atmosphere befitting this important milestone.

Held on Friday 5 June, the national final challenged participants across three demanding categories: a speech delivered in Mandarin Chinese, a Chinese cultural performance, and a question-and-answer session conducted entirely in Mandarin.

Serenay delivered a musical performance, singing 《风吹麦浪》. Tomas combined poetry recitation and traditional music, performing the Guzheng piece 《渔舟唱晚》 and reciting 《诗经·蒹葭》. Ethan captivated the judges with a dramatic stage retelling of the attempted assassination of China's First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, presenting 《荆轲刺秦王》 with impressive linguistic skill, expressive acting, and confident storytelling.

Following the semi-final round, Tomas and Ethan secured places in the final ten competitors, an impressive achievement in a highly competitive field. Ethan went on to receive the Most Creative Award, having achieved the highest score in the Chinese cultural performance category.

 

The overall competition winner was Mariam Areigib from Nottingham University, who will now represent the UK at the international Chinese Bridge competition in China.

The students were supported at the event by Professor Julia Bennell, Executive Dean of Leeds University Business School, whose attendance reflected the University's commitment to supporting language learning, cultural exchange and student achievement on a national stage.

The celebrations also included a special congratulatory video message from Zheng Zeguang, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the United Kingdom, who recognised the achievements of the competition over the past 25 years and encouraged students to continue building connections between the UK and China through language and cultural understanding.

The students' success also reflects the dedication and hard work they invested in preparing for the competition. In the month leading up to the event, they received personalised support from Mandarin teachers and staff at The Business Confucius Institute (BCI) at the University of Leeds. This included language coaching, guidance in developing their cultural performances, and support during the competition itself.

Their achievements highlight the growing enthusiasm for Chinese language and culture at the University of Leeds and demonstrate the impact of the opportunities and support provided through the Business Confucius Institute.
