Meet the Author and Leeds Big Bookend present Jemimah Steinfeld: ‘Little Emperors and Material Girls: Sex and Youth in Modern China’

Meet the Authors is teaming up with Leeds Big Bookend to bring you a China book talk at this year’s ‘rock festival for words’ in Leeds City Centre. Up-and-coming author Jemimah Steinfeld will be talking about modern China’s sexual and cultural revolution, as described in her book ‘Little Emperors and Material Girls: Sex and Youth in Modern China’.

Behind China’s economic growth, a once-in-a-generation sexual and cultural revolution is taking place – all in the bars, cafes, and streets of China’s growing mega-cities.  Jemimah Steinfeld, author of ‘Little Emperors and Material Girls: Sex and Youth in Modern China’, will talk about this revolution. Steinfeld has written for CNN, Time Out and The Telegraph, amongst other publications. Through drawing on individual interviews and scholarly research, her book introduces some of the nation’s young movers and shakers, from single women above the age of 27 who are labelled leftover, to the nation’s pick-up artists, a man trying to sell sex toys to the rich, an actor trying to make it in “Chollywood” and many more.

Jemimah will be in conversation with Ellen Wang from the The Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds.

Ellen is a Beijinger born and bred, but has lived in the UK ever since she left China in her early teens. The majority of that time has been spent studying and working in Leeds, where she has now lived for 17 years. She is currently responsible for developing the Business Confucius Institute at the University of Leeds. Her main role is to bridge the gap between China and the UK, by promoting the understanding of both cultures within the region through outreach activities and the organisation of cultural events.

Time: 11:00 – 12:00

Location: Leeds Central Library, LS1 3AB
