James Holmes and Ahmad Elmouniery received a letter of congratulations from the Chinese Consul-General ZHENG Xiyuan, presented to them by BCI Chinese Director Professor TAN Youzhi.

The letter said that the Consul-General was delighted to hear of their success in the 18th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition.

James achieved second place in Europe (一等奖) and Ahmad fifth in Europe (三等奖) in the international televised finals in China this summer.

The Consul-General said: “Your hard work and dedication has given you the opportunity to represent the University of Leeds and the UK on a global stage and to play a role in strengthening cross-cultural relations between China and the UK. I trust that your teachers in the Business Confucius Institute and the East Asian Studies Department are very proud.”

Magic, one of the BCI teachers who tutored James, said in a previous news update that “it was a delight to see him surpass himself again and again, grow in confidence on stage, and constantly surprise everyone”.

BCI teacher Jianan commented that her tutee Ahmad “learnt a lot from the other contestants and has enjoyed pushing himself. I know this experience will be beneficial for him in the future.”

James and Ahmad are now in their final year of their Chinese language degree in the University of Leeds East Asian Studies Department.
